The Others

THE LIGHT WILL KILL THEM!!!

Horror

Rod Lott
Among all Hollywood's stabs at ghost stories and haunted-house movies of late — your "Paranormal Activity" and whatnot — none can hold a candle to the old-fashioned Gothic chills of 2001's "The Others," still mega-creepy after all these years and now on Blu-ray.

Twins of Evil

Double, double, toil and trouble ...

Horror

Rod Lott
For me, the more desperate Hammer Film Productions got as audiences’ tastes changed in the early 1970s, the more fun their flicks became. That’s why 1971’s Twins of Evil is now one of my favorites from the legendary British studio, after digging into its Blu-ray debut from Synapse Films.

Dark Shadows

The vampire comedy doesn't suck.

Comedy

Rod Lott
One of this summer's biggest bombs, Dark Shadows is only a disappointment if you expect a straight take on the 1960s Gothic soap opera. Then again, the TV series is such the definition of niche-cult that most moviegoers didn't know what to make of it. While I would have preferred to see Tim Burton go horror with the material — more Sleepy Hollow, less Beetlejuice — I still found the quasi-spoof comedy to be a mild delight.

The Monk

I vow that it’s a gem.

Thriller

Rod Lott
For several years, I’ve intended to read Matthew G. Lewis' 1796 novel, The Monk. I even bought a snazzy trade-paperback edition with an introduction from Stephen King. Never got around to cracking it open.
