KISS off

Off their rocker, that is.

Just the other day, a friend and I were discussing (very briefly, lest you think I’m a nerd, which I am) the infamous telefilm of 1978, “KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.”

And then this cover to “Archie Comics #627” hits my inbox. I smell a belated and equally cheesy sequel. —Rod Lott

The Story of Rock ’n’ Roll Comics

There’s another comic-book movie out now beside ‘The Avengers.’

Rod Lott
I grew up reading comic books — and today, occasionally make some extra dough writing for them — but I must admit, I’ve never heard of Rock ’n’ Roll Comics, the underground sensation at the heart of this lo-fi documentary from Wild Eye Releasing. Turns out, not knowing matters not; hardcore comics fans — or those just into esoteric, DIY projects — should find it interesting, if told with a little true-to-spirit sloppiness.

Archie Meets KISS

You read that title correctly.

Comic Book

All the Riverdale gang wants is a Halloween free of monsters. Naturally, that's not gonna happen; while Sabrina the Teenage Witch casts a protection spell, a meddling Veronica casts a projection spell, thus unleashing a vampire, a werewolf, a mummy and a Frankenstein-esque creature on the squeaky-clean populace.

'Blown Away,' indeed

When Carrie Underwood appeared in concert in Louisville, Ky., last month, it made the night — perhaps even life — of 12-yearold Chase Kurnick. The enterprising youth attended the show with his parents, and brought a homemade sign reading, “Will you be my first kiss?” Presumably becomes Oklahomans are such nice people, especially in Carrie’s hometown of Checotah, she brought the tween onstage to fulfill his fantasy.

Warner Archive raises Caine in a new Blu-ray of an old mystery.

Rod Lott
Just a decade after starring in Sleuth, Michael Caine returned to similar fare in 1982's Deathtrap. Both are crafty mysteries with a bare minimum of characters and even fewer settings, but many twists to leave viewers with spinning heads.

Kiss of the Damned

Pucker up.

Rod Lott
As if HBO's True Blood had been scrubbed clean of all its suds and Southern accents, Kiss of the Damned explores the politics and passions of a vampire community.
