Act of Valor

By sea, by air, by land, with cheese.

Action

Rod Lott
“Based on real acts of valor,” Act of Valor may prove a better Navy recruitment film than action film in the short term. While not the first movie depicting Navy SEALs doing their thing, it's the first movie to do so starring actual, active-duty Navy SEALs. Seriously — for privacy reasons, their names aren't even in the credits.

Zero Dark Thirty

Controversy doesn’t lessen the impact of one of 2012’s best films.

Thriller

Don’t trust the audience members.

Trusting them appears to be the cardinal sin of Zero Dark Thirty, a masterful, absorbing film dramatizing the CIA's 10-year hunt for Osama bin Laden. It has been at the center of controversy for its depiction of U.S. intelligence agents using “enhanced interrogation techniques,” otherwise known as torture.
