“Equal Justice Under Law” is engraved on the front of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. To me, the phrase — when applied to marriage — means “marriage equality,” both same-sex marriage and heterosexual marriage.

A giant step toward equality

Last week, I witnessed something I never expected to see in my lifetime. When I heard the ruling of the Supreme Court declare that the U.S. government can no longer discriminate against me or my friends, I wept. Now, at last, my marriage to my husband will be recognized in our own country.
