There’s nothing like rank hypocrisy by elected officials to inspire confidence in one’s government. When people in control of the government start talking about how bad the government is, one begins to fall into an uh-oh-I-tried-to-divide-by-zero vortex in which self-awareness is nonexistent.

Finally, a Republican who speaks the truth. In the article “Drug-testing for dollars” (News, Feb. 29, Oklahoma Gazette), when asked if we test [Temporary Assistance for Needy Families] applicants for drugs, why shouldn’t business owners applying for state incentives be drug tested as well, Republican Rep. Guy Liebmann replied, “If he hired somebody or brought in five more jobs, should we drug test him? He’s done the state a favor, putting them on the payroll and they’re going to pay taxes and use the local shops and eat out and so forth.”

In reference to Howard Hendrick’s editorial (“The tipping point for families,” March 7, Oklahoma Gazette), Howard is exactly right — he defines the problem elegantly, but does not cover the cause or the cure. Young people (anywhere in the world) will have sex, regardless of their economic status. When economic times are tough, what he describes is what will happen.
