Piranha 3D

Plot? Fish eat people. What more do you need?

Horror

Rod Lott
This past summer, only one movie featured Oklahoma City porn starlet Ashlynn Brooke losing her top and then losing her top half. (Well, to my knowledge, as I don’t watch porn.) That film was “Piranha 3D,” now on Blu-ray, either in 3-D or 2-D formats.

Diary of a Madman

Vincent Price makes awesome movies, including this one

Horror

Rod Lott
My love of horror can be traced directly back to the Vincent Price movies that used to litter the weekend schedules of local UHF stations of my childhood.

Your intelligence will be neither insulted nor triggered.

Sci-Fi

Rave all you want about Julia Roberts: superstar, Oscar winner, self-appointed god. It's her brother, Eric, who has the more interesting career.

Dinoshark

Knowingly cheesy, but still fun

Sci-Fi

Jackson County Jail / Caged Heat

One of the best double features in the series so far

Action

Rod Lott
Easily one of the best double features thus far in the “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” series is the pairing of 1976’s “Jackson County Jail” with 1974’s “Caged Heat.”

The Terror / Dementia 13

Horror films get the good scrub-over they’ve always deserved

Horror

Rod Lott
Two Roger Corman classics from 1963, his own “The Terror” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dementia 13,” make their Blu-ray debut in — wait, hold up: What business does a pair of public-domain staples have in the high-def format of Blu-ray?

The Ron Howard Action Pack

The fast, the furious and the funny

Action

Rod Lott
Before he was Oscar bait, fresh-faced former Okie Ron Howard was a child actor with directorial dreams.

Blood Bath

Take the plunge for old-school scares

Horror

Rod Lott

In tone and in theme, Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman’s “Blood Bath” from 1966 is reminiscent of Roger Corman’s “A Bucket of Blood” from 1959.

Mega Python vs. Gatoroid

Debbie Gibson vs. Tiffany vs. my time and patience

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Most of the creatures on tap in "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid" are CGI creations, yet the filmmakers didn't even bother to insert them in the parts of the frame where the actors were looking.

Battle Beyond the Stars

More fun than 'Star Wars,' at a fraction of the budget

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Roger Corman threw his might behind two "Star Wars" rip-offs, the Italian pickup "Star Crash" and his own, $2-million production shot on a lumberyard, "Battle Beyond the Stars," now making its Blu-ray debut in a 30th-anniversary edition.
