Eastbound & Down: The Complete Second Season

HBO's sauciest series scores another homer

Television series

Rod Lott
When we last saw egotistical, repulsive, overweight, rude, crude, arrogant, self-centered, self-destructive, alcoholic, weed-smoking, coke-snorting former pro baseball player Kenny Powers, he had left the love of his life on the side of the road and high-tailed it to Mexico, the no-good bum.

Conan the Adventurer: Season One

By Crom, it’s cheese with muscles!

Television series

Rod Lott
The Conan on display in the children’s cartoon of the early ’90s isn’t the Conan I know from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies of the early ’80s or the Robert E. Howard stories of the early ’30s.

Supernatural: The Anime Series

TV terror gets 'tooned.

Television series

Rod Lott
Since the CW cult hit horror "Supernatural" already had spun off into novels and comics years ago, why not cartoons? It's only natural, and the colorful, creepy Japanimation style makes a suitable fit.

Zen: Vendetta / Cabal / Ratking

Meditate on this: 'Zen' makes for excellent viewing.

Television series

Rod Lott
BBC's procedural mystery "Zen" is so good, it stands right alongside the superlative "Sherlock" and "Luther" in my book. Based on Michael Dibdin's series of 11 novels of Italy's antiheroic Detective Aurelio Zen, the show's first season is comprised of three 90-minute episodes, each at a quality equal to or above most feature films.

Man from Atlantis: The Complete TV Movies Collection / The Complete Television Series

Before ‘Dallas,’ Patrick Duffy made a splash as a waterlogged wonder.

Television series

Rod Lott
Being all of 6 years old during its brief run on the tube, I have only vague memories of “Man from Atlantis,” Patrick Duffy’s pre-“Dallas” TV series that has become a sci-fi cult hit ever since.

Sanctuary: The Complete Third Season

The sci-fi show about abnormals may be getting too normal.

Television series

Rod Lott
The third time’s not the charm for “Sanctuary,” a one-time web series now a full-fledged Syfy hit. It’s still a darn good show overall, but season three moved away from what it originally was, and with so many other shows doing the same thing — “Warehouse 13” and “Fringe” come to mind — and better, it’s beginning to feel tired.

Police Story: Season One

The arresting ’70s crime classic was worth the wait.

Television series

Rod Lott
Far too young to catch it when it debuted in 1973, I’ve literally waited decades to set my eyes on “Police Story,” the NBC anthology series that broke the mold for cops on the tube by adding realism. Reading creator Joseph Wambaugh’s recent episodic novels about Hollywood cops only strengthened my thirst.

Shaft: The TV Movie Collection / The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: 8-Movie Collection

Get 'Shaft'ed and cry 'U.N.C.L.E.' with these TV sets.

Television series

Rod Lott
Richard Roundtree is there, and so is Isaac Hayes' iconic, Oscar-winning theme, but "Shaft: The TV Movie Collection" isn't quite the "Shaft" of the 1970's feature-film trilogy. The operative word there: "TV," which means little of the R-rated shenanigans that made the character so popular.

The Hour

Tick-tock and you don't stop. Or do you?

Television series

Rod Lott
All signs pointed to me liking "The Hour":
