The Apparition

I ain’t ’fraid of no ghosts.

Horror

Rod Lott
Call me crazy, but 3,400 square feet seems like an awfully massive home for a strip-mall veterinarian's assistant and a Geek Squad-esque installer of home-theater systems. Then again, the place does have its drawbacks: doors open on their own, furniture moves mysteriously, mold appears, and then things start to die within its well-mortgaged walls — a Costco cactus here, the neighbors’ dog there.

Nature Calls

Scout’s honor: This movie should be funny.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Nature Calls finds writer/director Todd Rohal attempting to shoehorn the wonderfully, outlandishly absurd humor of his previous film, 2011's The Catechism Cataclysm, into a vehicle more mainstream. While it doesn't generate ill will, it does not work, try though the cast might.

Sushi Girl

For those who like it raw.

Thriller

Rod Lott
No matter what you see or hear, don't move a muscle. That’s the advice one very bad man gives to the titular Sushi Girl. Particularly squeamish viewers won’t be able to adhere to such counsel, as this minor crime gem revels in the revolting.

Making schools safe

Commentary

Todd Lamb
After the tragic events in Newtown, Conn., last December, Senate President Pro Tempore Brian Bingman and House Speaker T.W. Shannon asked me to chair the Oklahoma Commission on School Security (OCSS). As a former U.S. Secret Service special agent, I have a background and training in security. As a state senator, I was the principal author of the Oklahoma School Security Act.

The Hangover Part III

Let's 'Hang' again.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Once The Hangover became a monster hit in the summer of '09, a sequel was inevitable. So was the backlash, which greeted The Hangover Part II upon its arrival two years later. Complained the multiplex populace, "It's too much like the first one!"

Static

Who's knocking at my door?

Thriller

Rod Lott
A knock at the door in the middle of the night? Never a good sign. Freshman director Todd Levin's Static sparks to life with one such nocturnal omen.

Witchboard / Night of the Demons

Oh, what a 'Night!'

Horror

Rod Lott
Some things never change; Witchboard opens with an argument over intelligent design and references crises in the Middle East. Yet some things do; cheesy horror movies like Witchboard used to open wide across this great land of ours, thriving and profiting on their way to assured cults via home video. Nowadays, they have to skip theaters entirely. The loss is ours, collective nation!
