Hereafter

Clint Eastwood's least interesting directorial effort of the double-aughts

Drama

Rod Lott
Call it poor timing, but Clint Eastwood's "Hereafter" opens with a Hawaiian tsunami sequence that is absolutely stunning (especially on Blu-ray) and totally deserving of its recent Oscar nomination for visual effects.

The Mechanic

Enjoyable work from Hollywood's go-to action guy

Action

Rod Lott
Whether “The Transporter” or now “The Mechanic,” Jason Statham has one job in Hollywood, but he does it quite well: being cinema’s most reliable action star of the 21st century.

Cowboys & Aliens

No joke, pardner: ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ is pure popcorn entertainment.

Science Fiction

Phil Bacharach
“Cowboys & Aliens” sounds like one of those high-concept flicks for which you might expect the idea went no further than the jokey title. Think “Snakes on a Plane.”

Blackthorn

For a taste of Westerns the way they used to be, carve out a slice of time for ‘Blackthorn,’ starring Sam Shepard as a twilight-time Butch Cassidy.

The Last Hard Men / Sky Riders

While Coburn isn’t ‘Hard’ to like, some of his movies are.

Action

Rod Lott
As a recent release of a bitch-slappin' medical mystery reminded me, James Coburn is really as cool as Clint Eastwood, so I welcomed Shout! Factory’s new “Action Double Feature,” which places two of the late actor’s 1976 films on one DVD.

Enter Nowhere

And that’s just where it goes.

Thriller

Rod Lott
I haven't yet seen Cabin in the Woods, next month's much-buzzed-about horror-thriller from producer/co-writer Joss Whedon, but judging from its trailer, the initial scenes of Enter Nowhere ring of visual similarity. That’s likely where all comparisons will end.
