Crime Does Not Pay: The Complete Shorts Collection (1935-1947)

Look who broke out of obscurity jail.

Drama

Rod Lott
Coming presumably from the deepest, darkest, dankest corner of Warner Archives’ basement, right by the leaky pipe from which hangs an opossum about to give birth, comes a true obscurity: Crime Does Not Pay: The Complete Shorts Collection (1935-1947).

A Three Stooges Celebration

Sample the Stooges for not a lot of scratch.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Hopefully, the new-to-DVD Three Stooges movie — which is actually pretty decent, unless you're a humorless mother-nyuk-er — spurs more viewers to try the real thing. For those wanting to sample their black-and-white brand of slapstick with minimal investment, many bargain-DVD collections exist containing only their material that has fallen into the public domain.

The Walkmen — Heaven

Rock

Joshua Boydston
Few bands enjoy the steady acclaim that The Walkmen have, with each passing album stacking right up to the one prior. Heaven is no exception, sounding like a victory lap for an amazing career.

It’s a TV-on-DVD fall frenzy!

Featuring nine shows about zombies and maids and gigolos and gladiators and government agents and visitors from the grave and ...

Television series

Rod Lott

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th

The men and women behind the mask.

Documentary

Rod Lott
How appropriate that a history of the Friday the 13th fits into a snug 13 chapters on Blu-ray and DVD. It makes me wonder if its running time of 6.66 hours also were intentional.

Switched on

TV gets weird.

Television series

Rod Lott
Not everything on television has to appeal to mass audiences. In fact, with the further fractioning of viewership thanks to alternatives like Netflix and VOD, more series can afford to become more niche. Here are five examples of shows both past and present — and new to DVD and/or Blu-ray — that encompass some of the more outrageous ideas ever to go beyond boardroom discussion.

Broadchurch: The Complete First Season

Kneel at this great mystery.

Television series

Rod Lott
Welcome to the coastal resort of Broadchurch, population … oh, who can keep track, what will all the corpses? Yes, Broadchurch is yet another British television procedural involving the search for a murderer in a quaint little town, just like the limited series The Fall and Top of the Lake.

Walk this way

Sidewalks are some of earliest MAPS 3 projects to be completed and add 65 miles of pedestrian-friendly travel to the cityscape.

News

Ben Felder
Sidewalks don’t grab the spotlight like convention centers and streetcars, but Mayor Mick Cornett called the planned addition of nearly 65 miles of new sidewalks across the city one of the most important parts of Metropolitan Area Projects, or MAPS 3.
