Uneasy eats

Is the food on the menu leaving you stumped? We’ve got you covered with simple rules for eating tricky dishes while staying within the boundaries of etiquette.

Food and Drink Features

Carol Smaglinski

We’ve all had it happen at least once in our lives. You try to cut in half a garnet red beet, but instead send the firm root vegetable dancing off the plate onto the spotless white tablecloth or the floor.

Students cover tax cuts

The word “irresponsible” to describe the pending income tax cut on Jan. 1, 2012, is probably an understatement.

Commentary

Kurt Hochenauer
Oklahoma college students should expect another increase in tuition costs this fall, in part, because the state Legislature will probably not stop what University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren has called an “irresponsible” tax cut.

Red Scorpion

This ‘Scorpion’ is king among ’80s action.

Action

Rod Lott
When The Expendables reinvigorated my love of Dolph Lundgren, the one movie I couldn't wait to get my hands on from his golden age of wide theatrical releases was the one I never got to see: 1988's Red Scorpion. So naturally, it was out-of-print.

Cut it

OKG7 things to do

I thought my ability to cut wrapping paper in a fairly straight line was brag-worthy. Nope! Not compared to “scissor artist” Karl Johnson, who can almost instantly turn anyone — live or photographic — into a paper silhouette suitable for framing. From noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, he returns to Full Circle Bookstore, 1900 Northwest Expressway. Admission is free, but reserve a five-minute appointment for a $25 custom silhouette. Call 842-2900 or visit fullcirclebooks.com.

Now with 100 percent more major metropolitan area destruction!

Comedy

Rod Lott
How long has it been since you've seen 1986's Little Shop of Horrors, the Oscar-nominated musical comedy produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Martin Scorsese? No, I haven't erred; according to producer David Geffen in a half-hour special on this definitive Blu-ray edition, those Hollywood heavyweights were part of his original plan.

Total Recall

Consider that a divorce.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
I'm not of the opinion that remakes are automatically a bad thing. Without them, we wouldn't have David Cronenberg's The Fly or John Carpenter's The Thing. The difference is that examples like those had a different way of telling the established story.

The Protector / Crime Story

Jackie Chan is twice the man.

Action

Rod Lott
Who in the hell hires Jackie Chan and then tells him not to kick a lot? The Exterminator director James Glickenhaus, that’s who.
