The FP

Dayum!

Comedy

Rod Lott
Those initials of The FP stand for Frazier Park, a small town in California riddled with gangs — 248 rules the north; 245, the south. These aren't the Boyz N the Hood gangs you're thinking of; these guys are interested only in Beat-offs. That's not the X-rated activity you're thinking of, either; it's the named for competitions of the Beat Beat Revelation video game — this creative film's don't-sue-us equivalent of Dance Dance Revolution.

Bullhead

A drama with balls about a guy with none.

Drama

Rod Lott
One of this year's Academy Award nominees for Best Foreign Language Film, the Belgian drama Bullhead does nothing to change the public perception that the category's entrants wear perpetual frowns. After all, its protagonist so clearly, so early, states his life's motto: "You're always fucked."

Klown

One tart and tasty Danish!

Comedy

Rod Lott
That The Hangover director Todd Phillips has plans to helm an Americanization of the Danish comedy Klown (or Klovn) comes as neither a surprise nor a shock. I'd only be surprised if the remake can get within arm's length of equaling it.

Wake in Fright

G'day, mate? Hardly!

Thriller

Rod Lott
From 1971, Wake in Fright is a lost film recently and literally rescued from near-oblivion. While I can’t say I was familiar with it before its Drafthouse Films re-release, I’m glad it was saved. To have lost a work this good would have been a blow.
