Hostel / Hostel: Part II

Hurt so good.

Horror

Rod Lott
Few critics are unable to see through the violence and admit there's a real artfulness at work in Eli Roth's pair of Hostel films, both now available in their unrated director's cuts on a single, budget-priced Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment.

[REC] 3: Genesis

’Til death do us part.

Horror

Rod Lott
After four previous films (when you factor in the American Quarantine versions), is there life left in Spain's zombie found-footage franchise? [REC] 3: Genesis responds with a festive "¡Si!"

The Great Gildersleeve Movie Collection

You’d have to be a harrrrrd man not to like it.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Now that I’ve devoured Warner Archive’s The Great Gildersleeve Movie Collection, I know who my mom was referring to all those years. It’s irrelevant for your enjoyment of the set, but Harold Peary’s Gildersleeve character proved so popular on the Fibber McGee and Molly radio program, he was spun off into his own show (and eventually TV and these films).

Terminator Anthology

Get it before Skynet takes over.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Quoth the cyborg, “I’ll be back.” And he was. And now again, this time in the form of Terminator Anthology, Warner Home Video’s Blu-ray box set of the four franchise films to date. It could be argued that the movies stopped being good when James Cameron stopped directing them. After revisiting the quartet, I don't agree — I strongly agree.

Police Story / Police Story 2

Cop a feel.

Action

Rod Lott
Like many, my first exposure to Jackie Chan was through 1981’s The Cannonball Run. That doesn’t count.

Sadako 3D

One last spin around ‘The Ring.’

Horror

Rod Lott
Japan's Sadako 3D purports to be the final chapter of the Ringu films (remade as The Ring on these shores). If you believe this is truly the end, you're adorable in your gullibility. Even the movie's final moments contradict any semblance of closure.

Mad Max Trilogy

From the days when one could root for Mel Gibson.

Action

Rod Lott
Prior to Lethal Weapon, Mel Gibson was best-known as the hero of a postapocalyptic Down Under in 1979’s Mad Max, 1981’s The Road Warrior and 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Blu-rays of each come housed in one of those unnecessary tins via Warner Home Video's new Trilogy set.

Anatomy / Anatomy 2

A cut above the rest.

Horror

Rod Lott
Partly a German reaction to the Scream phenomenon of the late 1990s, the 2000 film Anatomy cast Franka Potente (then hot off Run Lola Run) as Paula, an ambitious med student in a med school more at home for psychos and nutjobs.

Ball control

Two soccer team operators battle for the honor of being OKC’s favorite football club.

Sports

Murray Evans
Two well-known local sports operators — Prodigal and Sold Out Strategies — find themselves on opposite sides. Prodigal, led by owner Bob Funk Jr., plans to bring a USL Pro team to the city that will start play next year. The United Soccer League and North American Soccer League (NASL) each eye Oklahoma City with a potential for a thriving professional franchise, one that someday could play at the highest level of the sport in North America.
