Lawless

The family that bootlegs together, stays together.

Drama

Rod Lott
If John Hillcoat is setting out to build a directorial career on downbeat and depressing films, he's doing a fine job. From The Proposition and The Road — especially The Road — and now Lawless, bleakness is his bread and butter.

The Dark Knight Rises

Christopher Nolan directs a fitting send-off to his Batman trilogy.

Action

Phil Bacharach
Due to the twisted savagery of a young man in a Colorado movie theater, The Dark Knight Rises will forever be a footnote in American history. Hopefully, that horrific massacre will not influence perceptions of this epic conclusion to writer-director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Wake in Fright

G'day, mate? Hardly!

Thriller

Rod Lott
From 1971, Wake in Fright is a lost film recently and literally rescued from near-oblivion. While I can’t say I was familiar with it before its Drafthouse Films re-release, I’m glad it was saved. To have lost a work this good would have been a blow.

The Howling

Team Jacob?!? Try Team Dante.

Horror

Rod Lott
One of at least four werewolf films to be released in 1981, The Howling remains a distant second to John Landis' An American Werewolf in London, but only because Joe Dante wasn't able to enjoy the competition's deep coffers. Sacrilege alert: I find Dante's to be the better movie.

Go Limp

Don’t let the name fool you; local punks Limp Wizurds write some seriously strong tunes.

Music

Joshua Boydston

You probably think of the Fred Durst-fronted, rap rock powerhouse Limp Bizkit when you hear the name of Oklahoma City punk outfit Limp Wizurdz.

It’s no accident.

Laugh it

OKG7 things to do

Gazette staff

Saddle up, partner. Comedian Cowboy Bill Martin wants to make you hee-haw (that’s laugh, for you city folk). But this ain’t no ordinary rodeo; Cowboy Bill brings a different kind of funny that has been likened to “Gary Busey with an edge” by The Fort Worth Star Telegram. See him perform 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tuesday, 8 p.m. Thursday, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday at The Loony Bin, 8503 N. Rockwell Ave. Tickets are $8-$30. Call 239-4242 or visit loonybincomedy.com.
