CFN Quote of the Week

Ernest Istook, on global warming and Al Gore

CFN

Gazette staff
“It’s nothing new for Al Gore to claim that global warming (or should we call it global cremation?) is causing cold weather instead of hot. He already admitted that he was wrong to tout ethanol, but did it for political purposes. His latest comments are just as consistent."

Needle

You may feel a little prick ...

Horror

Rod Lott
After letting loose a couple of duds in two Asian flicks — "The Sylvian Experiments" and "The Child's Eye" — the horror arm of Lionsgate DVD gets its groove back on track by going Down Under and bringing back "Needle."

The Burning Moon

Phase out this lunatic ‘Moon.’

Horror

Rod Lott
Judging by the hype surrounding the DVD release of “The Burning Moon,” one would think Intervision has done cult-film enthusiasts a solid by preserving this 1997 obscurity for all mankind.

Don't Go in the Woods

Don’t go near the directorial debut of Vincent D’Onofrio.

Horror

Rod Lott
New to DVD, 2010’s Don't Go in the Woods is not to be confused with 1981’s Don't Go in the Woods. That one was a cheap slasher movie; this one is a cheap slasher movie in which characters wonder what John Fogerty and the Donner party have in common, and then sing songs.

Kill List

Killing, chilling.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Kill List is not your ordinary, average hit-man thriller — it’s an excellent one. The UK film skirts into areas of horror before plunging in at the end, but maintaining an uncompromising level of excellence throughout. It's a strong candidate for that year-end best list. That said, its subject matter will prove to be too much for most to take.

Jersey Shore Shark Attack

Goombahs and gore galore.

Comedy

Rod Lott
With one of those titles that doubles as a story summary, Jersey Shore Shark Attack is the rare made-for-Syfy film that has more to it than said title.

Zombie A-Hole

Yawn of the dead.

Horror

Rod Lott
Even if it sported a bland title, I still would've wanted to see Zombie A-Hole, for the simple fact that it's writer/director/producer/editor/animator/etc. Dustin Mills' follow-up to 2010's The Puppet Monster Massacre, one of the more fun films the cult world has yet to embrace, because not enough of its residents have seen it. That's my theory, anyway.

Hostel / Hostel: Part II

Hurt so good.

Horror

Rod Lott
Few critics are unable to see through the violence and admit there's a real artfulness at work in Eli Roth's pair of Hostel films, both now available in their unrated director's cuts on a single, budget-priced Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Rites of Spring

A well-seasoned thriller.

Horror

Rod Lott
For a quarter of a century, Rites of Spring tells us in its opening titles, teenage girls have gone missing, and their bodies never recovered. The two young women abducted from their car in the indie horror film’s first act are sure to be the latest. Sure enough, they’re soon hanging by their bound wrists in a dirty old barn.

Creep Van

Buckle up!

Horror

Rod Lott
Says a concerned mother in the opening scene, "If I've told you once, I've told you a hundred times: Stay away from vans. Only bad people own vans." Truer words, ne'er spoken, especially in the case of Creep Van, an independently funded flick of horror from the heart.
