Building Liberia’s library

Nearly 24,000 books leave OKC for West Africa, where texts are nearly nonexistent.

News

Phil Bacharach
Thousands of books donated by Oklahoma City churches and organizations are on their way to students in Liberia. Volunteers at the Crown Heights United Methodist Church loaded more than 23,500 books on a Hobby Lobby truck this morning — a bounty headed to Indiana before its final destination in West Africa.

Take my campus ... please!

CFN

Gazette staff
The Green family, owners of Hobby Lobby and Mardel stores, can sell everything from overpriced furniture to plastic Jesus night lights to bad end-times fiction, but they can’t give away a free school. Twice this year, the Oklahoma family has tried to donate a 217-acre campus in Northfield, Mass., only to be rejected by the objects of their charity.

Countering contraceptives

CFN

Gazette staff
The owners of Hobby Lobby and Mardel are continuing their quest to keep the Affordable Care Act from forcing them to provide emergency contraception insurance coverage to their employees. That vow — presumably made with a fist waved righteously in the air — came after U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton on Nov. 19 denied a preliminary injunction sought by the Green family, which owns the Christian-oriented businesses.

Commentary

Dr. Dana Stone
“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.”

What about Bob (Jones)?

CFN

Gazette staff
Steve Green, the president of Oklahoma City-based Hobby Lobby, spoke at Bob Jones University on Feb. 25. According to a statement from the Christian fundamentalist university, Green was to tell the story of his family’s Christian company and discuss the Green Collection, the world’s largest collection of biblical manuscripts and antiquities.

Consistent religious beliefs

Letters to the Editor

Nancy Roche
Isn’t it ironic that Hobby Lobby is using religious beliefs as an excuse to not participate in the health care mandate, but it doesn’t hesitate to import all that garbage they sell us from China, where women are still strongly encouraged to have abortions?

Balanced journalism

Letters to the Editor

Lawrence Curtis
Congratulations for publishing Dr. Dana Stone’s timely and splendidly written “The truth of emergency contraception” (Commentary, Feb. 20, Oklahoma Gazette). Her rationale was validly bolstered by well-supported and cited facts. Her commentary was an effective, appropriate and much-needed contribution to a volatile and poorly understood subject — more accurately, a widely misunderstood and high-profile controversy of the day.

Crossing Obamacare

Hobby Lobby's legal battle against the Affordable Care Act has made it a darling of evangelical Christians nationwide.

News

Peter Wright
For supporters of Hobby Lobby, the fluorescent bulbs that light store aisles have perhaps become a beacon of righteousness. The Oklahoma City-based chain stepped into the political fray late last year with a controversial lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a case that has garnered praise from some of the most prominent evangelical figures in the country.

Questioning Hobby Lobby

Letters to the Editor

Dennis Weigand
In all the back and forth about Hobby Lobby and the Affordable Care Act (News, Peter Wright, ”Crossing Obamacare,” May 1, Oklahoma Gazette), there is one important question that I have not seen addressed: Is employment at Hobby Lobby conditional on agreement with the religious views of the owners?
