We had the opportunity to discuss the issue of “sprawl” with more than 600 citizens who gathered last month at a town hall meeting in Oklahoma City. The meeting included presentations from Councilman Ed Shadid, City Manager Jim Couch and the director of almost every city department.

Working toward walkability

No matter what health statistic is considered, Oklahoma City generally does not fare very well. It has higher rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease than most of its peer cities. No doubt some of that can be attributed to personal decisions, but some of it is due to our built environment. We have built a city that, in most areas, makes travel by walking and cycling more difficult than driving a vehicle.
