Now that the 4.5-mile downtown route for the MAPS 3 streetcar — Phase 1 — has been decided, the challenge will be to get it completed at a cost anywhere near the amount budgeted. The experience in other cities indicates it will cost far more to build — and to keep it running — than we’ve been told.

It has been more than 66 years since Oklahoma City had meaningful intracity rail transit. In 2009, voters took a huge leap toward our transit future by endorsing a $130 million-dollar downtown rail-based modern streetcar system and intermodal hub as part of MAPS 3.

Walk this way

Sidewalks are some of earliest MAPS 3 projects to be completed and add 65 miles of pedestrian-friendly travel to the cityscape.

Sidewalks don’t grab the spotlight like convention centers and streetcars, but Mayor Mick Cornett called the planned addition of nearly 65 miles of new sidewalks across the city one of the most important parts of Metropolitan Area Projects, or MAPS 3.
