Rational on climate change

Letters to the Editor

Mike Brake
Robin Meyers uses the terms “idiot” and “criminal” to describe Sen. Jim Inhofe’s opposition to prevailing theories of climate change (Commentary, “An embarrassment of a senator,” Oct. 3, Oklahoma Gazette), which suppose that man-made greenhouse gases are responsible for upward trends in global temperatures. That is unfortunate; it is rarely helpful to personally denigrate those with differing views, and it avoids a real look at issues more complicated than either Inhofe or Meyers seems to understand.

A court in their court

Letters to the Editor

Steve Ditto
The radical right wing (state chamber) just must politicize everything, even the courts (Commentary, Fred Morgan, “Common sense needed on the court,” June 26, Oklahoma Gazette). It decries “legislating from the bench,” conveniently forgetting the concept of judicial review (alive and well since 1803) and a number of decisions with which it agrees (defined as “not legislating from the bench”), such as Bush v. Gore (picked a U.S. president), Citizens United (overturned decades of precedent) and, most recently, the gutting of the Voting Rights Act, which Congress overwhelmingly affirmed in 2006.

Oklahoma’s public defenders

Commentary

Robin Meyers
I am not talking about those brave, idealistic, underpaid lawyers who work to protect the last and the least, but KFOR, KOCO, KWTV and other local media outlets whose job it has become to defend the honor and reputation of our state when it is under attack by “foreigners” — aka, Australian politicians, lying journalists at Sports Illustrated or even the “unorthodox” Ed Shadid.

Oklahoma’s mean Jesus

Commentary

Robin Meyers
After three decades of ministry in Oklahoma City, the land of my birth and the home of so many resilient, creative and wonderful people, I have come to the conclusion that despite all our loving up on Jesus, we are not very religious.

LETTERS

Online shops need to collect taxes

Letters to the Editor

Steve Schlegel
While I understand that things move slowly in Washington, D.C., I simply don’t understand why it has taken more than 20 years for Congress to take action to help America’s local businesses.
