12 Creature Features

Need a dozen ways to kill a weekend? Just add cheese!

Horror

Rod Lott
I don't know that Mill Creek Entertainment's three-disc set of 12 Creature Features is quite the "dream come true" for "B-movie lovers" as the box proclaims, but that's only because so much of the contents likely already exist in their collections of public-domain DVDs.

Dark Crimes

How to kill 3,640 minutes of time wisely.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Mill Creek Entertainment’s budget pack of noir, Dark Crimes, strongly goes against the notion that films in the public domain are there because they aren't any good. That’s nonsense.

Grand Duel / Keoma

Two helpings of spaghetti, please!

Western

Rod Lott
Mill Creek Entertainment offers another "Spaghetti Western Double Feature" by pairing 1972's Grand Duel and 1976's Keoma on one Blu-ray. Although both already are available on the company's Ten Thousand Ways to Die: The Spaghetti Western Collection on DVD — not to mention a dozen other labels' public-domain discs — the prints here are so clear that fans of the genre should consider the small investment.

D.O.A.

Twenty-four hours to live, in 96 minutes or less.

Thriller

Rod Lott
A guy walks into a police station to report a murder: himself! With that setup, one could make a tight, terrific crime film — and D.O.A. is that movie ... in 1950. The 1988 remake doesn't fare as well, but at least it's been preserved on Blu-ray by Mill Creek Entertainment.

New York Stories

One outta three ain’t bad, when that one is Scorsese.

Drama

Rod Lott
I have fond memories of seeing John Ritter in Blake Edwards’ 1989 sex comedy, Skin Deep, in theaters ... because right after it was over, two friends and I snuck into the movie we really wanted to see: another newcomer, New York Stories.

Ten Thousand More Ways to Die: Spaghetti Western Collection

Saddle up ... for, oh, about 18 hours.

Western

Anyone who believes public-domain DVD box sets don't contain any good movies, take note: You're dead wrong.

Hostel / Hostel: Part II

Hurt so good.

Horror

Rod Lott
Few critics are unable to see through the violence and admit there's a real artfulness at work in Eli Roth's pair of Hostel films, both now available in their unrated director's cuts on a single, budget-priced Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment.
