Magic Mike

Abracadoldrums!

Drama

Rod Lott
Please believe me when I say that my dislike for Magic Mike has nothing to do with being heterosexual. It has everything to do with mediocre acting and a mess of a script. And I say this as one of the civilized nation’s biggest Steven Soderbergh’s apologists who will defend the goodness of Haywire and Contagion to the point of fisticuffs if we must.

At Any Price

A gifted filmmaker takes a detour with a farmland melodrama.

Drama

Phil Bacharach
Ramin Bahrani has directed three extraordinary, independently produced films about characters living on the margins on society. That trio — Man Push Cart (2005), Chop Shop (2007) and Goodbye Solo (2008) — rightly earned him scads of critical acclaim and excitement about his future projects.

Bert Stern: Original Madman

Our snap judgment: See it!

Documentary

Rod Lott
For someone who claims to be so uncomfortable in front of the camera, Bert Stern never shuts up in Original Madman, the documentary about him. And I'm sure glad he didn't, as the story of his life is a must-absorb for anyone interested in film, fashion, photography, art, design, advertising, popular culture, counterculture ... oh, hell, let's say American history in general.
