Sector 7

For sci-fi thrills, '7' is no heaven.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Alien has no shortage of rip-offs, but Sector 7 has the distinction of hitting video while Prometheus is in theaters. While Prometheus isn't great, it's better than Sector 7. Heck, even the much-maligned Alien vs. Predator is better than Sector 7.

Zombie A-Hole

Yawn of the dead.

Horror

Rod Lott
Even if it sported a bland title, I still would've wanted to see Zombie A-Hole, for the simple fact that it's writer/director/producer/editor/animator/etc. Dustin Mills' follow-up to 2010's The Puppet Monster Massacre, one of the more fun films the cult world has yet to embrace, because not enough of its residents have seen it. That's my theory, anyway.

Bigfoot

Toes the line of Syfy stupidity.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
At least Bigfoot does not waste viewers’ time in showing them Bigfoot. They have to wait one minute, tops, so if that’s all you ask of this Asylum release that premiered recently on Syfy, you’re golden.

Grimm: Season One

These ain't no fairy tales.

Television series

Rod Lott
Marrying Hollywood's current fairy-tale craze to the ever popular crime procedural is Grimm. While it works on both levels, that it blends the two into a unified whole gives the concept so much fizz, as the 22 episodes of its five-disc first season indicate. This one's perfect for marathoning.

Karate-Robo Zaborgar

This one’s rightfully robo-cocked.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Japan's Karate-Robo Zaborgar is a movie that has everything: a female cyborg girl with a detachable head and with missiles hidden in her metal bra, a samurai robot with enormous lips, a floating castle, a lactating man, multiple exploding footballs, a flying wheelchair powered by flatulence, and, lest we forget, sex tentacles.

The Barrens

Something in Jersey is more demonic than Snooki.

Horror

Rod Lott
In a post-Saw world, Darren Lynn Bousman quietly has been making a series of horror films more in line with scary movies of the 1970s than the torture-porn genre he helped usher in. Already this year, DVD has brought us his superlative Mother's Day remake and the low-key demonic pic 11-11-11, and now The Barrens. It's just too bad they've all been denied wide theatrical releases.

Hypothermia

Left me cold.

Horror

Rod Lott
There's a lot to be said for horror films that use their low budgets as a positive thing. Hypothermia, however, isn't one of them — a shame, because its producers have excelled elsewhere, with Stake Land, The House of the Devil and especially The Innkeepers.

The Ghostmaker

Give it a ‘Ghost’ of a chance.

Horror

Rod Lott
While cleaning a widow’s basement, college student Kyle (Aaron Dean Eisenberg) finds a dusty coffin. Smelling a big eBay sale, he takes it home to clean it up and finds that’s it no ordinary box for bones, but a padded that conceals an intricate system of gears and a built-in music box, not to mention a key dated 1452.

Frankenstein

A rather Randy version of the monstrous classic.

Horror

Rod Lott
Perhaps best known for being the bad guy of the early '90s blockbusters Patriot Games and Sleeping with the Enemy, Patrick Bergin must be the king of literary adaptation also-rans. He played Robin Hood in 1991 film that was denied a theatrical release because Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves sewed that all up. He's played Dracula … but in a made-for-TV movie, not a Francis Ford Coppola spectacle.

Rites of Spring

A well-seasoned thriller.

Horror

Rod Lott
For a quarter of a century, Rites of Spring tells us in its opening titles, teenage girls have gone missing, and their bodies never recovered. The two young women abducted from their car in the indie horror film’s first act are sure to be the latest. Sure enough, they’re soon hanging by their bound wrists in a dirty old barn.
