Oral argument

Letters to the Editor

Frank Riddick
Randy Potts’ hermeneutic (Life, Greg Horton, “Walk this way,” Sept. 21, Gazette) would have to admit that murder has no conflict with Christianity.

Vlog

Tag this one #guiltypleasure.

Horror

Rod Lott
My latest guilty pleasure is the super-short “Vlog.” At first, I was uncertain whether the 71-minute horror film was supposed to be funny on purpose, but I was certain that it’s supposed to gory, coming from several “Saw” producers. Even if you hate that franchise, give this stripped-down effort a shot. It may surprise you.

In the Land of Blood and Honey

Drama

Phil Bacharach
“In the Land of Blood and Honey” doesn’t skimp on wartime atrocities.

While the Patient Slept

No catching Zs during this zing-filled mystery.

Thriller

Rod Lott
All the way back from 1935, While the Patient Slept begins with a logo stating it's a Clue Club Picture. Was that a regular picture-show "thing"? The Clue Club? Because if it was, I would've been a faithful follower, just based upon this good-natured mystery, recently released by Warner Archive.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

What the Dickens? Murder, of course.

Thriller

Rod Lott
It's not often one sees the credit "completed by" in a film or TV series, but not many never-finished novels are even considered worthy of adapting to screen. However, most authors aren't the legendary Charles Dickens.

The House Across the Street / Homicide

More noir.

Thriller

Rod Lott
As if Warner Archive hasn’t re-released enough murder mysteries on MOD DVD lately, here’s another helping, pairing 1949’s The House Across the Street and Homicide on one disc overflowing with film noir. I gladly made room for it.

Dark Crimes

How to kill 3,640 minutes of time wisely.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Mill Creek Entertainment’s budget pack of noir, Dark Crimes, strongly goes against the notion that films in the public domain are there because they aren't any good. That’s nonsense.

Bernie

Comedy

Phil Bacharach
The real-life Bernie Tiede was the toast of Carthage, Texas. An assistant funeral director with a gift for consoling grieving widows, the portly Bernie was gentle, solicitous and unflaggingly polite. He spruced up many a funeral service with his spot-on tenor, to say nothing of his penchant for lavishing gifts on everyone he came across.
