The Expendables 2

Bigger, better, badassier.

Action

Rod Lott
Preceding the start of The Expendables 2 is an ad for its tie-in video game. Why bother playing such a thing when so many sequences of the the movie make you feel like you're doing so already? I mean that as a compliment, because as directed by Simon West (The Mechanic), the sequel’s 15-minute prologue is so unrelenting in nonstop action that it’s likely to turn you giddy.

The Big Boss / Fist of Fury / The Way of the Dragon / Game of Death

Bruce is loose ... again!

Action

Rod Lott
Let us now praise a giant of action cinema: Bruce Lee. It seems like a good time, given Shout! Factory’s reissuing of four of the man’s marital-arts titles via a pair of double-feature DVDs: one with 1971’s The Big Boss and 1972’s Fist of Fury, the other with 1972’s The Way of the Dragon and 1978’s partly posthumous Game of Death. In total, that’s three-point-two-five good movies.

Velvet underground

No longer the medium of art sold on street corners, velvet is a fave for Trent Lawson.

Features

Eric Webb
By day, Trent Lawson is a mild-mannered preparator at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, helping to display other people’s work. But by night, he’s a superhero of the local art scene who recently has gained increasing notoriety for paintings featuring pop-culture mashups with nods to art history and absurdist humor on that most refined of material, velvet.
