New plays and musicals are a rare thing for Central Oklahoma. What can be done to change that?

Performing Arts

Larry Laneer
Central Oklahoma professional, semipro, collegiate and amateur theater companies — along with touring shows and performance-art events — will stage nearly 100 productions this season. But rarely will the presentations be new plays and musicals.

Some plays shy away from hard-hitting issues. Clybourne Park is not one of those plays. The R-rated comedic production tackles topics like race and gentrification, and it won a bunch of awards as a result (a Tony and a Pulitzer, no less). See the University Theatre production 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 in the Weitzenhoffer Theatre, 563 Elm Ave. in Norman. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Call 325- 4101 or visit ou.edu/finearts.
