Piñataland — Hymns for the Dreadful Night

Beautiful arrangements, skilled players and excellent production. What more could you want?

Indie

Stephen Carradini
As a newly minted music producer, I’m now professionally invested in the way that recordings sound (which means I have even more distaste for the intentionally terrible recordings of the San Francisco garage-rock scene).

The Jimi Hendrix Experience — Hendrix in the West / Winterland

How many different versions of ‘Hey Joe’ do you need to hear, really?

Rock

Matt Carney
I’m absolutely, totally, 100 percent, completely in support of reissues. There is great music in the past that often gets neglected or forgotten once the generation that popularized it ambles a few years into their first mortgages.

We Were Here

Documentary

Phil Bacharach
It would have been understandable had “We Were Here” veered into the maudlin. The documentary, which recounts how San Francisco’s gay community united in the 1980s to combat the AIDS epidemic, has its share of gut-wrenching stories. But the film is admirably no-frills.

Royal Baths — Better Luck Next Life

Mix the dirty blues, paranoia and ugly guitars, and you’ve got a winner of a sophomore album.

Rock

Matt Carney
It sounds Jeremy Cox and Jigmae Baer got the best of both coasts.
