Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

One of the small-screen’s scariest, now in a special edition.

Horror

Rod Lott
My first response after seeing the recent remake “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”: “I liked it OK, but I still prefer the original, although I haven’t seen it in probably 15 years.”

Laugh this

OKG7 things to do

Gazette staff

You’ve seen him steal scenes in the likes of Scary Movie 3, Soul Plane, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Little Fockers and, yep, Scary Movie 4. Now, see Kevin Hart at what he does best: stand-up comedy. At 8 p.m. Saturday, Hart pumps out joke after joke at Chesapeake Energy Arena, 100 W. Reno. Tickets are $55.65-$80.15. Call 800-745-3000 or visit chesapeakearena.com.

ParaNorman

Youth

None
If you haven’t seen 2009’s Coraline, you might be more inclined to surrender yourself to the macabre charm of ParaNorman. Both films, works of stop-motion animation by the Oregon-based Laika company, share much in common: an outcast protagonist, ineffectual grown-ups, visually stunning riffs on the supernatural.

Lovely Molly

Good golly, Miss 'Molly'!

Horror

Rod Lott
Another camcorder film? Only in part, but at least Lovely Molly comes from the mind of Eduardo Sánchez, who helped kick-start the craze back on a mainstream scale with 1999's The Blair Witch Project, which he co-wrote and co-directed. So there's that, not to mention this must be the only one scored by avant-garde indie instrumental act Tortoise.

Apartment 143 [Emergo]

This is why landlords require deposits.

Horror

Rod Lott
Cross Paranormal Activity with an "ALL BILLS PAID!" banner, and you have Apartment 143 [Emergo]. That's not to suggest the film is, er, low-rent.

The Barrens

Something in Jersey is more demonic than Snooki.

Horror

Rod Lott
In a post-Saw world, Darren Lynn Bousman quietly has been making a series of horror films more in line with scary movies of the 1970s than the torture-porn genre he helped usher in. Already this year, DVD has brought us his superlative Mother's Day remake and the low-key demonic pic 11-11-11, and now The Barrens. It's just too bad they've all been denied wide theatrical releases.

Back from Hell

'Hell' is hell.

Horror

Rod Lott
This being the Halloween season, odds are many a found-footage film will be watched over the next several weeks. How to choose between so many? Allow me to help ever so slightly: Steer clear of Back from Hell.

Sinister

It’s reel scary.

Horror

Rod Lott
Although horror movies rarely scare me, I love them. The most I can hope for is to be creeped out sufficiently, and Sinister satisfies that bill.

Sadako 3D

One last spin around ‘The Ring.’

Horror

Rod Lott
Japan's Sadako 3D purports to be the final chapter of the Ringu films (remade as The Ring on these shores). If you believe this is truly the end, you're adorable in your gullibility. Even the movie's final moments contradict any semblance of closure.
