Act of Valor

By sea, by air, by land, with cheese.

Action

Rod Lott
“Based on real acts of valor,” Act of Valor may prove a better Navy recruitment film than action film in the short term. While not the first movie depicting Navy SEALs doing their thing, it's the first movie to do so starring actual, active-duty Navy SEALs. Seriously — for privacy reasons, their names aren't even in the credits.

Lucky Devils

'Devils' made me do it.

Drama

Rod Lott
It's fun to compare Lucky Devils — a 1933 RKO Picture about stuntmen — to something more contemporary, like 1980's The Stunt Man or even last year's Drive. According to this fun flick, safety was like an afterthought, with the guys who were risking their lives getting the scene explained to them once, quickly and just before the director called, “Action!”

Nitro Circus: The Movie

Wow! Ouch!

Documentary

Rod Lott
Granted only a limited theatrical release this summer, Nitro Circus: The Movie is like Jackass with more athleticism, more engineering know-how, more maturity, more corporate sponsors, and much less testicular trauma.

Beauty Day

Before ‘Jackass,’ there was Cap’n Video.

Documentary

Rod Lott
Don’t feel stupid: I didn’t know who Ralph Zavadil was, either. After all, we can’t be faulted for living in Oklahoma City instead of Ontario, Canada. Ultimately, it makes no difference, because Beauty Day, the documentary about the man, is a fun viewing nonetheless. That’s because there’s something about watching stunts of bodily harm that holds universal appeal.

Police Story / Police Story 2

Cop a feel.

Action

Rod Lott
Like many, my first exposure to Jackie Chan was through 1981’s The Cannonball Run. That doesn’t count.

Skull World

It’s not necessarily connected to the funny bone.

Documentary

Rod Lott
I’m of two minds about the documentary feature Skull World, now available on VOD: On one hand, its subject is not your ordinary, everyday guy who’s been doc’d to death. On the other, why encourage him?
