An anonymous inquiry at the start of Kathy Harms’ two-week sex education course read: “I thought vulva made cars.” It came as no surprise to the teen pregnancy prevention educator, who regularly encounters sexual myths in Oklahoma City’s seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms. She’s met teens who think inserting a red skittle into the vagina after intercourse will prevent pregnancy and others who say swallowing semen can actually cause pregnancy — because babies grow in the stomach.

That even today, “teen pregnancy” continues to be misrepresented as just the result of teenage ignorance and carelessness (Life, Rachel Curtis, “Sensible sex ed,” April 24, Oklahoma Gazette) is more proof of the need to abandon this sexist misnomer. The large majority of male partners are adult men.
