Outlet malls were a big deal to middle-school me. Where else was I going to drag my mom to try and find a cheap pair of Guess jeans? Answer: nowhere. Not even those meccas of last-season looks and sales. My mom apparently hated me (but let’s be clear: I was 13, so I probably hated me, too), so I was stuck in J.C. Penney knockoffs with names like Guessed! and Guest?
I’ll have to relive that trauma at The Outlet Shoppes (clever name!), slated to open in August way the hell out on Interstate 40 and Council Road. The mall — which will have 60,000 square feet of shops — has so far announced 78 shops, including Guess, BCBG Max Azria, DKNY and Le Creuset.
This is apparently the first outlet mall in the state (really?) and, according to a press release from the developer, is expected to draw more than 6 million shoppers a year from a three-state area. Again, really? Maybe I’m just not their demographic.
Anyway, the massive center will be more than just shopping, with (from the release) “landscaped courtyards, vibrant architectural features and a fun, lively setting throughout.”
I don’t know — vibrant architectural features sound amazing and all, but maybe I’m just too bitter from the Guess-related outlet-mall experiences of my youth. But parents, this is your opportunity to dangle the clothes that hold the key to your child’s popularity in front of them, then laugh wickedly and drive to Walmart.
