Beauty Day

Before ‘Jackass,’ there was Cap’n Video.

Documentary

Rod Lott
Don’t feel stupid: I didn’t know who Ralph Zavadil was, either. After all, we can’t be faulted for living in Oklahoma City instead of Ontario, Canada. Ultimately, it makes no difference, because Beauty Day, the documentary about the man, is a fun viewing nonetheless. That’s because there’s something about watching stunts of bodily harm that holds universal appeal.

Best in Show

Award-worthy comedy struts onto Blu-ray.

Comedy

Rod Lott
My favorite of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries is easily 2000’s Best in Show. While I think it helps to be a theater nerd to appreciate 1996’s Waiting for Guffman in full or a folk nut to opt for 2003’s A Mighty Wind, “must love dogs” is no requirement here. Love man’s best friend or hate him, the humor in Best in Show is less inside-baseball than its brothers.

Terminator Anthology

Get it before Skynet takes over.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Quoth the cyborg, “I’ll be back.” And he was. And now again, this time in the form of Terminator Anthology, Warner Home Video’s Blu-ray box set of the four franchise films to date. It could be argued that the movies stopped being good when James Cameron stopped directing them. After revisiting the quartet, I don't agree — I strongly agree.

Spyda “the Wise Musician” — Mr. Metaphor

Hip Hop/Rap

Louis Fowler
Oklahoma City’s rap revolution continues with Mr. Metaphor from Spyda “the Wise Musician,” a self-proclaimed “worldwide producer” with a style that’s “more doper than rocks of crack.”
