For the sake of the song

Okemah native John Fullbright started writing music with his listeners in mind. Two albums and a Grammy nomination later, he is finally connecting with them — a lot of them.

Music future is bright

John D. Carlson
The first time that I encountered the genius of John Fullbright was via a radio program. The show is produced by the owner of The Blue Door, and it shares its name with the title of Joshua Boydston’s excellent cover story on the artist (“For the sake of the song”; May 7, 2014; Oklahoma Gazette).

White knight

Era-defining guitarist Jack White kicked off his solo tour Thursday night at Tulsa’s Cain’s Ballroom.

Music

Joshua Boydston

Jack White has always been something of a time traveler. The first notes that crept out from those early days in Detroit were carved out of the best and brightest pockets of ’60s garage rock. And by the time "Seven Nation Army" grew into a cultural phenomenon in 2003 (one that you'll still hear marching bands charming the crowds at high school football games with today), Jack White had reconciled modern alternative with classic rock 'n' roll in a way few bands have ever come close to matching.

RiffTrax Live: Sharknado

OKG7 things to do

Gazette staff

If there ever was a movie destined for RiffTrax treatment, it’s Sharknado. The brilliantly trashy film made some serious waves (get it?) upon its release last summer, and now you can laugh along with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 comedians and see it on the big screen 7 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at AMC Quail Springs 24 with IMAX, 2501 W. Memorial Road, or Regal Spotlight Stadium 14, 1100 N. Interstate Drive, in Norman. Tickets are $9.50-$12.50. Visit fathomevents.com.

Monty Python Live (mostly)

OKG7 things to do

Gazette staff

Few, if any, comedy troupes had the long-lasting international appeal that Monty Python did. With a rotating cast of funny men like John Cleese, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle, the ol’ gang is getting back together for the first time in over three decades with a live broadcast event, Monty Python Live (mostly). Laughing commences 1:30 p.m. Sunday at AMC Quail Springs 24, 2501 W. Memorial Road, and Cinemark Tinseltown USA, 6001 N. Martin Luther King Ave. Tickets are $12.50-$17. Visit fathomevents.com.
