Back from Eternity

And feels like it.

Drama

Rod Lott
It's fun to view Back from Eternity as an early, lower-wattage version of the Airport disaster franchise that ruled the 1970s. Actually, I take that back: It’s not fun at all. It’s a dour, depressing, overwrought melodrama as only old-school Hollywood could do.

Red Scorpion

This ‘Scorpion’ is king among ’80s action.

Action

Rod Lott
When The Expendables reinvigorated my love of Dolph Lundgren, the one movie I couldn't wait to get my hands on from his golden age of wide theatrical releases was the one I never got to see: 1988's Red Scorpion. So naturally, it was out-of-print.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Iron Man vs. Lane Pryce in an average sequel.

Action

Rod Lott
Robert Downey Jr. reprises his other franchise role — the Golden Globe-winning one — as popular culture's arguably most popular detective of all time in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. To shortcut things, whatever you thought of Downey's first go-round in 2009, you're likely to have the same feelings about this 2011 sequel.

Crime Does Not Pay: The Complete Shorts Collection (1935-1947)

Look who broke out of obscurity jail.

Drama

Rod Lott
Coming presumably from the deepest, darkest, dankest corner of Warner Archives’ basement, right by the leaky pipe from which hangs an opossum about to give birth, comes a true obscurity: Crime Does Not Pay: The Complete Shorts Collection (1935-1947).

God Bless America

‘God Bless’ Bobcat Goldthwait for making this savage satire.

Comedy

Rod Lott
With God Bless America, writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait slices a wound on our country's collective stupidity, then wrings a lemon wedge into its opening. Too bad his targets aren't likely to watch it on purpose. And if they did, they're less likely to get the joke. Their loss.

Sound of Noise

Breaking the law never sounded so sweet.

Comedy

Rod Lott
One man's symphony is another's pollution, and to police inspector Amadeus Warnebring (Bengt Nilsson), head of the department's anti-terrorism unit, no music is good music. Although coming from a family of musicians, he's tone-deaf. Notes make his ears bleed, literally.

21 Jump Street

For a good time, 'Jump' on it.

Comedy

Rod Lott
To enjoy 21 Jump Street, one need not have been a fan of the 1987-91 Fox TV series of the same name. You might even enjoy the film more if you hated the show, notable only for making Johnny Depp a star. While not an outright parody per se, the action comedy does poke fun at how ridiculous the series' premise was.

Chesty Morgan's Bosom Buddies

You're in for a real t(r)eat.

Action

Rod Lott
Let's just state the obvious right, er, up front: Chesty Morgan has extremely large breasts. Unlike her name, they are God-given.

Savages

Thriller

Phil Bacharach
Oliver Stone might be best-known for making movies filled with political and cultural bomb-throwing (JFK, Natural Born Killers), but what makes his best works so eminently watchable is their visceral punch. He might claim he’s out to edify, but the guy can exploit with the best of ’em.
