Oklahoma City psych rockers The Electric Primadonnas have been in
hibernation for what feels like a couple of years, only emerging from
their slumber for the occasional show or to leak a rough cut of a track.

How did Eazy-E get his nickname? What about Dr. Dre or Ice Cube or any
other master MC with a moniker? Chances are few of them got it as part
of a misunderstanding at high school.

Atlanta rapper T.I. has released Trouble Man: Heavy Is the Head,
his eighth studio album and the first since his most recent stint in
prison. The title is no doubt a reference to his legal troubles on
federal weapons charges, but it also makes reference to the Marvin Gaye
song of the same name, which is sampled in the album’s opening track.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a raucous good time with Citizen
Fred’s self-titled disc. With guttural vocals and crunching guitars, it
sounds like the background music to a scene in a buddy-cop film where
the mismatched partners go into a sleazy strip club to shake down perps.

I know most purists would look middle-aged white guys playing soul music
and immediately pass — I can’t count how many times I have — but damned
if Dirty Red & the Soulshakers don’t rock the joint for all of its juke, lack of pigment notwithstanding.

This honky cat is really something else! Need proof? Just take a listen
to his swingin’ version of the Elton John classic. Deep bass grooves,
jaunty piano, smooth trumpet and sexy, crystalline vocals: This is the
version to which all others now must live up.

A lot of hip-hop is pure escapism: fantasies about fast cars,
attractive women and having more money than you know what to do with. High Character
is not that; it’s about as real and down-to-earth as it gets, while
still taking the time to appreciate the small things the world gives us.
