Dragon

Starring the ever-valuable Yen.

Action

Rod Lott
Ignore the Weinsteins’ needless re-christening of the Hong Kong film Wu Xia as the ever-generic Dragon. The important thing is that director Peter Chan (The Love Letter) has made not only one of the better martial-arts pictures of the new millennium thus far, but one that holds appeal to audiences not attuned to the genre.

Revenge for Jolly!

‘Revenge’ is a dish best ignored.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Your first sign that Revenge for Jolly! may not be for you: the dead dog hanging in the protagonist’s living room.

There are more.

The Bowery Boys: Volume Two

Comedy

Rod Lott
In the span of a decade, post-World War II, the comedy team known as The Bowery Boys (née The East Side Kids, née The Dead End Kids) made 48 movies. Up until now, I’d seen exactly zero of them.

The Place Beyond the Pines

The route of ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ is great to good.

Thriller

Phil Bacharach
The Place Beyond the Pines is two-thirds of a great movie. Director Derek Cianfrance’s follow-up to 2010’s Oscar-nominated Blue Valentine is a tense, powerful crime thriller with some weighty stuff on its mind. It speaks to the filmmaker’s know-how that not even a crazily contrived third act can damper its haunting power.

Skating Polly — Lost Wonderfuls

Rock

Zach Hale
Skating Polly is a different type of novelty act. The Oklahoma City-based duo of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse has accrued an inordinate amount of interest for such a young band, ascending to the top of the local ranks largely because of their age: 13 and 17, respectively.

Breezy Burnz — Product of My Enlightenment

Hip Hop/Rap

Joshua Boydston
Oklahoma City's own Breezy Burnz is tough to pin down, but that's half the fun of his latest mixtape, Product of My Enlightenment, a top-to-bottom solid effort that boasts a smattering of hip-hop complete with some of the catchiest hooks the 405 ever has seen.

Prettyboy — Dejvická

Pop

Joshua Boydston
It's always nice to see someone come into his or her own skin. With Dejvická, Prettyboy — the new moniker of Norman singer-songwriter Jacob Abello — does just that.

Manborg

Part man. Part machine. All really funny.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Following its hilarious Father’s Day, the ’80s-obsessed Canadian quintet known as Astron-6 unleashes another inspired homage/parody in Manborg. Instead of vengeance, sci-fi is the skewered genre of choice. And Manborg is indeed choice.

Iron Man 3

This metal is still precious.

Action

Rod Lott
You’ll hear the phrase “hot mess” bandied about the whole of Iron Man 3. For a while — the entire first act, really — the film embodies it, minus the hot.
