Thunderstruck boasts more than just the distinction of marking the big-screen debut of OKC Thunder superstar Kevin Durant. The film, an alleged comedy in which the Durantula’s basketball skills are inadvertently swiped by a school kid, might just be the first-ever family-friendly movie to include an appearance by an accused child molester. Granted, there was that John Wayne Gacy cameo in 1974’s Herbie Rides Again, but we’re told you’ve gotta look really fast for that one.

Four of the finest hours of entertainment this year can be found in The Crimson Petal and the White, an enchanting, seductive BBC miniseries based on Michel Faber’s best-selling novel. Set in London of 1874, in a time of cholera, it is, as co-star Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) states in a bonus interview, “a love story almost entirely bereft of love.”

Bridesmaids was the shot across the bow, with HBO’s Girls the follow-up fusillade: Women can cuss, drink and drug with the best of ’em. In that spirit arrives For a Good Time, Call …, a comedy with the scenario of what happens when a pair of unlikely 20-somethings start a phone-sex service.

All but dead, the drive-in movie once was at the forefront of entertainment, as American as baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet. I can’t think of a film that bottles that nostalgia better than Drive-In, an obscure comedy worth hunting down.

Josh Whedon is partially responsible for arguably the most creative pictures of this year, and I don’t mean The Avengers. I’m talking about The Cabin in the Woods, the horror film reputed to be a game-changer in the genre. It’s not the end-all-be-all film as hyped, but it is undeniably clever.

Before Hotel Transylvania, there was Mad Monster Party? (question mark theirs), a 1967 quasi-classic of stop-motion animation from Rankin/Bass — the company behind all those old Christmas specials that still air every year, from Rudolph to Frosty. What keeps this Party from being as perennial is that it's three times as long.

In the case of 1972's Sitting Target, the title refers to Pat Lomart (Jill St. John, Diamonds Are Forever), the wife of rough and rugged Harry (Oliver Reed, Gladiator). The opening scene finds her visiting him behind bars, where he's being held for murder. Since he's liable to get 15 years, she can't wait for him, so she's filing for divorce.

According to some fun facts that open The Tall Man, some 1,000 children vanish each year who never are found. In the near-dead mining town of Cold Rock, that's because they're taken by the mysterious titular figure who's cloaked in black and darts in and out of the woods.
