The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Abracadaverage!

Comedy

Rod Lott
There’s nothing wrong per se with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. It just desperately lacks the edge you know it had to have at some early stage, but lost somewhere in all the tinkering to tailor it to a widest-possible audience. Enough hints of it remain to make the movie worth a watch — perfectly agreeable, if perfectly forgettable.

Crimewave

We find it guilty ... of being underseen!

Comedy

Rod Lott
I’m the weird guy who saw Sam Raimi’s Crimewave before I saw Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead. Four or five times.

Enter the Dragon: 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition

Enter the greatest martial-arts film in history.

Action

Rod Lott
To karate-chop right to the chase, Enter the Dragon is the martial-arts movie to end all martial-arts movies. This comes as news to no one who has seen and enjoyed it over what now amounts to four decades. To celebrate that milestone, Warner Home Video has reissued it on Blu-ray in a handsome 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition.

The Call

Because ‘Rescue 911’ was taken.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Watching The Call was fun, and I suspect it would be even if my 13-year-old daughter weren’t screaming from fright the entire time. It’s exactly the kind of preposterous nerve-jangler Hollywood pulls off pretty well, moving so fast that it hopes you don’t notice all the holes in the plot.

Blood Runs Cold

Give it the ‘Cold’ shoulder.

Horror

Rod Lott
Blood indeed runs cold in Blood Runs Cold — just not yours, assuming you’re at least somewhat familiar with the rhythms and beats of the “ohmygodhesgotanaxwereallgoingtodie!” subgenre.

Would You Rather

Why, yes, I would!

Horror

Rod Lott
That innocent exchange of tough questions becomes Saw: The Home Game in IFC Midnight’s release of Would You Rather. How I would love to have seen an audience react to this in a theater!

Bullet to the Head

Action's once more on the Sly.

Action

Rod Lott
Lines of cocaine, tubes of neon, Sylvester Stallone: Is this 1986 or 2013? In his first solo vehicle since his Expendables comeback, Sly shoots for a Bullet to the Head, but the action film only breaks the skin, so to speak.

Femme Fatales: The Complete Second Season

Refractory period over; ready to go again?

Television series

Rod Lott
Certainly the favorite TV show of pubescent boys nationwide whose parents have no idea what airs on Cinemax after they go to bed, Femme Fatales is an anthology series that puts women on top, both figuratively and literally. The better sex engages in better sex, all while pulling the wool — surgically enhanced and otherwise — over the eyes of stupid men.

Detention of the Dead / The Demented

They put the “Zzzzz” in “zombies.”

Horror

Rod Lott
Ten years ago, we didn’t have enough zombie movies. Now, we have too many of them, which might not be a problem if most weren’t so bland and unimaginative. Detention of the Dead tries — not too hard, mind you — to distinguish itself by being a comedy. Technically, I suppose it is; in execution, it fails.
