When I first met Ed Shadid in 2011, he was running for Oklahoma City’s Ward 2 council seat. I expected the standard superficial political gesture and thrust out my hand, saying, “Nice to meet you, Dr. Shadid.” He met my eyes directly, shook my hand and responded, “Please, just call me Ed.”
