Shiny Toy Guns — III

Rock

Joshua Boydston
After an uneven presence following 2008’s hard rock-leaning Season of Poison, Shiny Toy Guns is back with its third release, appropriately titled III.

The Day

‘Day’ for naught.

Thriller

Rod Lott
So many Republicans took the news of President Obama’s re-election to such an illogical extreme, they took to Facebook and Twitter to warn the apocalypse was nigh, and you’d better grab all the guns you can. It’s almost as if they want societal collapse to happen. If they view The Day, however, they may rethink their stance, because the movie makes post-apocalyptic life look deathly boring.

Still swinging, swinging

While so many of their brethren have disbanded in the last 10 years, Oklahoma’s All-American Rejects just keep moving along like you know they do.

Loving our guns to death

Commentary

Robin Meyers
The Oklahoma response to the latest mass shooting will be utterly predictable. Gun rights in this state are like an official religion with a canned liturgy: “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.”

God’s presence amid horror

Letters to the Editor

David Hull
Amid of the horror in Connecticut, many fellow Christians likely will want to take up the counterpoint to the media’s discussions about guns and other perceived conservative Christian stereotypical debasements. Please don’t take the bait.

Dollar for the Dead

Once upon a time on TNT.

Western

Rod Lott
Perhaps to horn in on the expected Django Unchained action, Warner Archive has dug into its vaults to give a spaghetti Western a second helping of viewers. It found a unlikely offering in Dollar for the Dead, a 1988, made-for-cable effort starring Emilio Estevez. You could look at it like a Young Guns spin-off if you wish.

Guns, guns, guns!

State Rep. Mark McCullough, R-Sapulpa, evidently trying to merge reality with the action movie playing in his head, had a flash of insight on the massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Dick Tracy

If you thought the movie looked good before, you don't know ‘Dick.’

Family

Rod Lott
Unlike Madonna, Dick Tracy has aged quite well. Although considered somewhat of a disappointment upon its summer of 1990 release, unfairly attached with Batman-level expectations, Warren Beatty's film actually is quite successful in achieving its goals, which is even more apparent now that it's made a long-overdue Blu-ray debut from Walt Disney Studios.

Wake in Fright

G'day, mate? Hardly!

Thriller

Rod Lott
From 1971, Wake in Fright is a lost film recently and literally rescued from near-oblivion. While I can’t say I was familiar with it before its Drafthouse Films re-release, I’m glad it was saved. To have lost a work this good would have been a blow.
