The Wrath of God

Thou shalt not screw with Robert Mitchum.

Western

Rod Lott
What a kick it is to see Robert Mitchum biting into a stogie and laying waste to a room with a machine gun. Because, really, how often does a man of the cloth do that? No wonder the 1972 quasi-Western is titled The Wrath of God. The film takes place in a South American town so brutal and dismal that, as one character reasons, "If God had wanted to give the world an enema, he'd've stuck the nozzle in here."

Searching for Sugar Man

One sweet rockumentary.

Documentary

Phil Bacharach
This is a golden age of documentaries, and I don’t mean the propagandistic variety via Michael Moore or 2016: Obama’s America. Given the pervasive timidity and lack of imagination in Hollywood today, film buffs are well advised to take stock of documentaries, where the most gripping stories are being told.

Plan B’s

Food and Drink Features

Greg Horton
The burger biz must be booming these days, as evidenced by S&B’s Burger Joint poised to open a southside location Tuesday at the corner of Interstate 240 and S. Walker. Owner Bryan Neel said he wanted to expand the horizons for the local eatery, and he likes the area because of its concentration of businesses.

The Thieves

Let it steal your heart and your evening.

Thriller

Rod Lott
When done right, few films can provide as much enjoyment as the heist picture. South Korea's The Thieves is one of them — epic in every sense of the word: in length, in scope and in entertainment.

Buffalo roams

And rocks! For the third year in a row, The Buffalo Lounge will showcase Oklahoma musicians at the South by Southwest festival.

Music

Stephen Carradini
In less than a week, a small army of Oklahomans will invade Texas with the intent of taking over one of its storied events. The revolution will not be televised (what is these days?), but it will get loud: For the third consecutive year, the Oklahoma Film & Music Office will bring The Buffalo Lounge to Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW), Monday through Wednesday, March 13.

SXSW 2013: Tallows

When experimental rock’s Tallows takes the stage, don’t fret.

Music

Stephen Carradini
Fret-tapping is an alternate way of playing guitar that creates very percussive rhythms out of melodic sounds. Instead of strumming each note, the guitar player taps a finger from the fretting hand against each note on the fretboard. The mesmerizing rapid hand movements are a neat side benefit.

SXSW 2013: Horse Thief / Colourmusic

Horse Thief takes the reins, while Colourmusic paints music to be felt.

Music

Stephen Carradini
Horse Thief’s act of draping an Oklahoma flag over one of its amp stands may have just been a proud statement of local love, but it is also a reflection of its wide-open, rootsy, rock ’n’ roll sound. The band describes itself as a “psychedelic folk rock band,” and that description isn’t bad, either.
