OKG7 It’s a miracle on 23rd Street

Food and Drink Features

Kelley Chambers

Not so long ago, anyone frequenting retailers along NW 23rd Street between N. Broadway Avenue and Western Avenue was shopping for a wig or pawning a television. Cheever’s Cafe was the pioneering restaurant but sat alone for many years. Things didn’t happen overnight, but more restaurateurs gave 23rd a second look and that strip of Route 66 is a diner’s dream.

OKG7 Hot tropic

OKG7 Dining

Louis Fowler
We can only stare at Old Man Winter and hope that someday we’ll thaw out and retire to a sandy, tropical locale somewhere along the equator, where we can enjoy various fruit-heavy drinks and exotic meals served by well-trained monkey butlers. Even though that Jimmy Buffett-inspired daydream might not happen anytime soon, the metro offers plenty of tropical getaways that will drive those winter doldrums away.

Bricktown Blues and BBQ Festival

OKG7 things to do

Gazette staff

Blues and barbecue go together like wine and cheese, Simon & Garfunkel and legs and eggs — which is to say, each is good on their own, but they’re even better when paired with one another. Bricktown Blues and BBQ Festival features some of the finest local offerings in each of these departments, which you can see/hear/taste for yourself 4 p.m.- midnight Friday and 2 p.m.-midnight Saturday on the corner of Sheridan and Oklahoma avenues. Admission is free. Call 236-4143 or visit bricktownokc.com.
