The Weeknd — Echoes of Silence

The best trilogy since ‘Lord of the Rings.’ At least in the field of eerie, Canadian R&B.

Hip Hop/Rap

Matt Carney
Two leering, damaged R&B mixtapes in and I was nearly certain that provocative Toronto collective The Weeknd (the brainchild of remarkable singer Abel Tesfaye) had exhausted its scuzzy-production-and-luxurious pop-voice-singing-about-banging-groupies shtick.

Dead Hooker in a Trunk

Trust me: Leave it locked up.

Action

As Adam West once famously spoke as Batman, “Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb.”

Die

Roll 'em!

Thriller

Rod Lott
From our friends up north — Canada, not Kansas — comes Die, a nearly gore-free take on the rules of Saw. Three decades after his father forces him to roll a die and then fatally shoots himself in the head, a madman named Jacob (John Pyper-Ferguson, Tekken) goes on a mission to teach six clinically depressed people the value of life.

Happy Canadians

Letters to the Editor

John Downard
Mike Brake (Commentary, “Point: Disaster is ahead for Obamacare,” Aug. 8, Oklahoma Gazette) tells us that he doesn’t like government health care and that in Canada, with a government system that covers everyone, dogs can get a hip replacement in under a week while humans may have to wait two or three years.

Beauty Day

Before ‘Jackass,’ there was Cap’n Video.

Documentary

Rod Lott
Don’t feel stupid: I didn’t know who Ralph Zavadil was, either. After all, we can’t be faulted for living in Oklahoma City instead of Ontario, Canada. Ultimately, it makes no difference, because Beauty Day, the documentary about the man, is a fun viewing nonetheless. That’s because there’s something about watching stunts of bodily harm that holds universal appeal.

Manborg

Part man. Part machine. All really funny.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Following its hilarious Father’s Day, the ’80s-obsessed Canadian quintet known as Astron-6 unleashes another inspired homage/parody in Manborg. Instead of vengeance, sci-fi is the skewered genre of choice. And Manborg is indeed choice.

Better off Red

Grady’s 66 Pub devotes its stage to preserving Oklahoma’s Red Dirt roots, one band at a time.

Music

Louis Fowler
For almost two decades, Grady Cross was a member of Cross Canadian Ragweed, one of the most popular Red Dirt bands ever to cross the Red River. After years on the road and in the studio, he hung up his guitar to spend more time with his family in Yukon.

Still stealing land

Letters to the Editor

M.B. Stephenson
The myth surrounding the construction of the KXL Pipeline is that it will further fuel us in Oklahoma by providing energy independence and jobs.
