Zero Dark Thirty

The real torture is its incredible tension.

Drama

Phil Bacharach
Don’t trust the viewers.

Trusting them appears to be the cardinal sin of Zero Dark Thirty, a masterful, absorbing film dramatizing the CIA's 10-year hunt for Osama bin Laden. It has been at the center of controversy for its depiction of U.S. intelligence agents using “enhanced interrogation techniques,” otherwise known as torture.

Stitches

A horror comedy that doesn’t clown around.

Comedy

Rod Lott
We’re slipping, America. It look to Ireland to make the best horror comedy in recent memory, Stitches. The subgenre is one of the toughest to pull off — a feat about as rare as finding a four-leaf clover.

Manborg

Part man. Part machine. All really funny.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Following its hilarious Father’s Day, the ’80s-obsessed Canadian quintet known as Astron-6 unleashes another inspired homage/parody in Manborg. Instead of vengeance, sci-fi is the skewered genre of choice. And Manborg is indeed choice.

Dark Skies

Close encounters of the suburban kind.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Thanks to examples like The Others and Sinister, moviegoers know that whenever a kids' crayon drawing pops up, it's never a good sign for the protagonists. Add Dark Skies to that list.

Bullet to the Head

Action's once more on the Sly.

Action

Rod Lott
Lines of cocaine, tubes of neon, Sylvester Stallone: Is this 1986 or 2013? In his first solo vehicle since his Expendables comeback, Sly shoots for a Bullet to the Head, but the action film only breaks the skin, so to speak.

Hatchet III

Ax and ye shall receive.

Horror

Rod Lott
Hatchet III posits that a man whose face has been turned to raw meat can get right back up and walk around as if nothing happened. Then he gets chainsawed into even halves, yet even that fails to faze him.

Dark Angel

The high-def release comes in peace.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
When did 1990's I Come in Peace become Dark Angel? More importantly, why? Did some porno cop its title? Now people will confuse it with that one TV series Jessica Alba did for James Cameron before she became a movie star.

The Haunting of Helena

Lotsa teeth, no bite.

Horror

Rod Lott
One cannot discuss The Haunting of Helena without bringing 2003's Darkness Falls into the conversation. Both horror movies are about an über-evil Tooth Fairy (really a malevolent spirit of a female killed ages ago), and Helena's heroine looks not unlike the earlier film's Emma Caulfield. I'd go so far as to call this one an unofficial remake, with the setting transplanted to Italy.
