The Right to Love: An American Family

A documentary follows one gay couple’s fight for ‘The Right to Love.’

Documentary

Rod Lott
Just handfuls of hours ago, as part of Election Day, the Senate gained its first openly gay senator. Even to a heterosexual male like me, the win of Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin is an encouraging step that our country is slowly starting to accept that we aren’t all alike, that differences should be celebrated, rather than feared.

For years, the area around N.W. 39th and Pennsylvania has been home to a loose-knit collection of bars and businesses catering to Oklahoma City’s gay and lesbian community. But Jeremy Crites, president of OKC Pride, said it has lacked a sense of community.

Deathtrap

Warner Archive raises Caine in a new Blu-ray of an old mystery.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Just a decade after starring in Sleuth, Michael Caine returned to similar fare in 1982's Deathtrap. Both are crafty mysteries with a bare minimum of characters and even fewer settings, but many twists to leave viewers with spinning heads.

Wake in Fright

G'day, mate? Hardly!

Thriller

Rod Lott
From 1971, Wake in Fright is a lost film recently and literally rescued from near-oblivion. While I can’t say I was familiar with it before its Drafthouse Films re-release, I’m glad it was saved. To have lost a work this good would have been a blow.

It's a blessing

Oklahoma’s Episcopal Diocese provides materials allowing for the blessing of same-sex unions.

News

Greg Horton
The Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma last week published documents that allow for the blessing of same-sex unions in Oklahoma. Bishop Ed Konieczny said the materials — which include guidelines for clergy and an approved liturgy (order of service) — clearly state that the union is not a legally binding ceremony.

Nice Guys Don’t Work in Hollywood: The Adventures of an Aesthete in the Movie Business — Curtis Harrington

But Harrington did!

Nonfiction

Rod Lott
Curtis Harrington’s autobiography is how I imagine the man to have been: soft-spoken, honest and intelligent. Those wondering, “Who’s Curtis Harrington?” should know that is part of the book’s point. Here was a talented filmmaker who never quite got his due, for reasons that had nothing to do with creativity and everything to do with commerce. Here was an artist who worked in a system that had no interest in art.

The Jeffrey Dahmer Files

“Go look in the refrigerator.”

Documentary

Rod Lott
Understandably, a documentary about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer that weaves fictional elements with fact sounds like a wretched, evil, exploitative thing. Instead, it's a small marvel of microcinema — and another argument for the storytelling power of the nonfiction format.
