Casting the Runes

Rent a 'Rune' with a view.

Horror

Rod Lott
I remember vividly when I first read "Casting the Runes," one of several suspense classics to pour from the pen of M.R. James, the master of the ghost story whose supernatural bent became a huge influence on H.P. Lovecraft. Just because the short story is old (1911) doesn't mean it wasn't chilling to read, and so it is with this 1979 presentation, an episode of the UK's ITV Playhouse anthology series.

Above Suspicion: Set 1

It’s no mystery what makes this series great.

Television series

Rod Lott
As beloved as Lynda La Plante’s long-running crime series Prime Suspect is, her Above Suspicion deserves equal adoration. It’s another example of how the British leave viewers wanting more, rather than taking the American approach of burning them out, because the first two seasons — all seven episodes between them — come collected on Acorn Media’s two-disc Set 1. This leaves two more seasons as yet unreleased, so I pray we see a Set 2 soon down the pipe.

The Crimson Petal and the White

Oh, Sugar, Sugar.

Television series

Rod Lott
Four of the finest hours of entertainment this year can be found in The Crimson Petal and the White, an enchanting, seductive BBC miniseries based on Michel Faber’s best-selling novel. Set in London of 1874, in a time of cholera, it is, as co-star Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) states in a bonus interview, “a love story almost entirely bereft of love.”

Back from Hell

'Hell' is hell.

Horror

Rod Lott
This being the Halloween season, odds are many a found-footage film will be watched over the next several weeks. How to choose between so many? Allow me to help ever so slightly: Steer clear of Back from Hell.

A years-old winning design for a bus stop will jump from sketch to street

News

Rod Lott
Five years ago, Metro Transit riders waiting for the bus may have been bombarded with questions from a fellow bench sitter. The inquiries weren't the ramblings of a madman, although it might have seemed that way to those being quizzed.

The Thief of Bagdad

Still magical, nearly 90 years later.

Action

Rod Lott
With the Cohen Film Collection, we may have another Criterion Collection-level provider of classic movies in the making, if its Blu-ray presentation of The Thief of Bagdad is any indication.
