A Three Stooges Celebration

Sample the Stooges for not a lot of scratch.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Hopefully, the new-to-DVD Three Stooges movie — which is actually pretty decent, unless you're a humorless mother-nyuk-er — spurs more viewers to try the real thing. For those wanting to sample their black-and-white brand of slapstick with minimal investment, many bargain-DVD collections exist containing only their material that has fallen into the public domain.

Kids can’t get enough of the Sugar Free Allstars’ ooey-gooey funk rock. Good thing the Oklahoma City duo has a new album to munch on.

Animal Collective — Centipede HZ

Indie

Joshua Boydston
There really was no way for Animal Collective to match Merriweather Post Pavilion, widely considered the best album of 2009. It’s damn near impossible to bottle lightning twice, especially with the caustic and combustible ingredients the psych-rock band uses to build its ambitious opuses, in which indie electronics meet space rock.

Painting the town Greg

Longtime local artist Greg Burns keeps up with the ever-changing city.

Visual Arts

Patrick Crain
Somewhere there exists a run of prints of a one-off Greg Burns piece containing a small detail that makes it rare. At first blush, it looks familiar enough: a rendering of the iconic Townley’s milk-bottle grocery store on Classen Boulevard.

Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

Proves Kong is still king.

Action

Rod Lott
Although my bank account thinks otherwise, I miss the early-aughts craze of DVDs, in which one count upon pristine prints of one martial-arts film or another hitting store shelves. Many of them starred Jackie Chan or Jet Li.

Plan B’s

Food and Drink Features

Greg Horton
The burger biz must be booming these days, as evidenced by S&B’s Burger Joint poised to open a southside location Tuesday at the corner of Interstate 240 and S. Walker. Owner Bryan Neel said he wanted to expand the horizons for the local eatery, and he likes the area because of its concentration of businesses.

Shiny Toy Guns — III

Rock

Joshua Boydston
After an uneven presence following 2008’s hard rock-leaning Season of Poison, Shiny Toy Guns is back with its third release, appropriately titled III.
