Eighteen years ago, Midtown was nothing more than a “neglected backwater” replete with halfway houses and abandoned buildings. Faced with blighted conditions years before the April 19, 1995, disaster, Midtown was instead a ghost town created by the 1980s’ devastating oil bust and ensuing disinvestment.

But American Hustle begins with Christian Bale, paunchy and fleshy and in decidedly non-Dark Knight shape, fixing his hair with a watchmaker’s precision. He glues down a massive comb-over and maneuvers a monstrous toupee before the coup de grâce: dousing the hirsute creation in nearly half a can of hairspray.
