23:59

Time for so-so Singapore horror.

Horror

Rod Lott
What we call 11:59 p.m., those in the military call 23:59. What Singapore calls 23:59, we Americans call ... well, same thing: 23:59. Numbers tend to translate very well.

The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh

Do not watch it while home alone.

Horror

Rod Lott
Many deadCENTER Film Festivals ago, one of the entries I was assigned to review in advance was the suspense short The Eyes of Edward James, the debut of writer/director Rodrigo Gudiño. It chilled me to the bone.

My Amityville Horror

Arguably better than most of the sequels (and definitely the remake).

Documentary

Rod Lott
Daniel Lutz doesn't like people to know he's one of the children who lived through The Amityville Horror — as Jay Anson's best-selling book and subsequent smash movie called it — and yet here he is, front and center for an entire documentary on that "unfortunate gift." Be glad he gave in; My Amityville Horror is an occasionally gripping portrait of a middle-aged man still coming to terms with a terrible childhood.

Magic Magic

It could use some, use some

Thriller

Rod Lott
Michael Cera … scary? It's one of the last adjectives I'd apply to Arrested Development's poster child of awkward pauses, yet in the odd thriller Magic Magic, the vibe he exudes is nothing if not uncomfortably creepy. Give him credit for not playing another Indie Mopey Hoodie Boy.

An American Ghost Story

A pile of sheet.

Horror

Rod Lott

Here's how ludicrous the protagonist of An American Ghost Story is: He still uses American Online. Here's how ludicrous An American Ghost Story is as a whole: It uses AOL's once-ubiquitous greeting of “You've got mail!” as a scare.

The Black Waters of Echo's Pond

Don't even dip your toes.

Horror

Rod Lott

To paraphrase a character late in The Black Waters of Echo's Pond, anything to get off this movie. From the start, director Gabriel Bologna (The Asylum's 30,000 Leagues Under the Sea) has no real hold on the material; what little there is gets so far away from his grasp that his last name proves accidentally apt.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death

Let's not.

Horror

Rod Lott

After hearing about Let's Scare Jessica to Death for years, I'm thankful I finally got to see it, newly rescued from out-of-print oblivion by Warner Archive. I only wish the 1971 shocker had proven worthy of its hype.

Heeeere’s Johnnie’s corpses

CFN

Gazette staff
Mustang residents are nauseated over a Halloween display by Johnnie Mullins that includes, you know, gravestones, ghosts dangling from tree branches and ... a faux, bloody, headless corpse in his driveway — with handprints around it, as the poor soul was fighting for his life when a garage door closed on him.
