[REC] 3: Genesis

’Til death do us part.

Horror

Rod Lott
After four previous films (when you factor in the American Quarantine versions), is there life left in Spain's zombie found-footage franchise? [REC] 3: Genesis responds with a festive "¡Si!"

The Definitive Document of the Dead

It’s all messed up.

Documentary

Rod Lott
Significantly updated from his 1985 documentary, The Definitive Document of the Dead promises to be the last word director Roy Frumkes has to say on his subject of zombie godfather George A. Romero. If not, perhaps it should be.

Big Tits Zombie

Shot in Japan, but you probably knew that.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Reveals Big Tits Zombie lead actress Sora Aoi in the disc's behind-the-scenes footage, "We have action, nudity, striptease, zombies, and splatter." Oh, you guessed that already? Either way, her eight words could double as a review.

Elvira’s Movie Macabre: Mega Movie Marathon

Like an old-school monster rally busting at the seams!

Horror

Rod Lott
“Paired” — ahem — thematically across six discs are 12 feature films hosted by Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark, on her Mega Movie Marathon. Far from the horror hostess’ only DVD in circulation, this collection offers tremendous value by compiling several previously released double features into one set.

Doomsday Book

The end of the world is two-thirds terrific.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Not based on Connie Willis' seminal sci-fi novel of the same name, Doomsday Book is preoccupied not with time travel, but the world's end. Telling three separate stories, the Korean film comes from acclaimed directors Kim Jee-woon (I Saw the Devil) and Yim Pil-sung (Hansel & Gretel). As with all anthologies, results vary; ultimately, this one ends up as two-thirds great.

Osombie

The war on terror meets ‘The Walking Dead.’

Action

Rod Lott
By sheer coincidence, Osombie arrived on my desk the same day I screened Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar-worthy depiction about the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Osombie begins where Zero ends: with the American military raid on bin Laden's compound on May 2, 2011. Whereas Zero puts bullets in the al-Qaeda leader's body, Osombie lets him inject himself with an aggressive pathogen so that, once he washes up on the Arabian Sea, he's a full-fledged zombie.

Resident Evil: Retribution

‘Evil’ dead.

Action

Rod Lott
Fifth in the increasingly slick but decreasingly lucid franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution had potential to be the best entry since the 2002 original. After all, returning director Paul W.S. Anderson (The Three Musketeers) has positioned so many elements from the previous films that it seemed set up to play like a greatest-hits package. Instead, the result is baffling.

Bath Salt Zombies

More than just a tantalizing title.

Comedy

Rod Lott
It’s kind of amazing how far $5,000 can get filmmakers these days, especially when Dustin Mills is in charge of the cash. Having helmed the inventive Puppet Monster Massacre and, less effectively, Zombie A-Hole, he now sets his deranged sights on designer drugs in Bath Salt Zombies. As one could surmise, it, too, sits squarely in the DIY horror-comedy realm.

Detention of the Dead / The Demented

They put the “Zzzzz” in “zombies.”

Horror

Rod Lott
Ten years ago, we didn’t have enough zombie movies. Now, we have too many of them, which might not be a problem if most weren’t so bland and unimaginative. Detention of the Dead tries — not too hard, mind you — to distinguish itself by being a comedy. Technically, I suppose it is; in execution, it fails.
