Girls Gone Dead

T&A that earns a D.

Comedy

Rod Lott
I'm torn between whether the horror comedy Girls Gone Dead is misogynist or merely plays pretend. That it’s written by a woman boggles the mind.

No Mercy

No, but thanks.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Straight out of South Korea, No Mercy shows exactly that. But too bad it's only for the first act.

Self-defense

The former attorney for convicted pharmacist Jerome Ersland defends himself against accusations of incompetence and unethical behavior.

News

Phil Bacharach
UPDATE: Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater disputed Irven Box's contention that Jerome Ersland ever was offered a plea deal. Prater told Oklahoma Gazette that Box told prosecutors Ersland strongly believed he had done nothing wrong and had ruled out the possibility of serving any prison time. In light of that, Prater said he told Box, there was no reason even to discuss a possible plea bargain.

Above Suspicion: Set 1

It’s no mystery what makes this series great.

Television series

Rod Lott
As beloved as Lynda La Plante’s long-running crime series Prime Suspect is, her Above Suspicion deserves equal adoration. It’s another example of how the British leave viewers wanting more, rather than taking the American approach of burning them out, because the first two seasons — all seven episodes between them — come collected on Acorn Media’s two-disc Set 1. This leaves two more seasons as yet unreleased, so I pray we see a Set 2 soon down the pipe.

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

The truth hurts.

Documentary

Rod Lott
I can't believe — just. cannot. believe. — that Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory lost the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this past spring. And to a football movie, no less! It's another case of the jocks running ragged over the outcasts, except these outcasts were able to effect something few docs achieve: change.

Mother's Day

Mama knows be(a)st.

Horror

Rod Lott
Until now, I had never seen the 1980 horror film Mother's Day, but its poster art has stayed top-of-mind when I first stumbled upon the VHS box in the early '80s, when the Sound Warehouse at Northwest Expressway and Rockwell Avenue — may it rest in peace — started renting movies in addition to keepin' the metro rockin' with a wide selection of LPs and cassettes.

Grimm: Season One

These ain't no fairy tales.

Television series

Rod Lott
Marrying Hollywood's current fairy-tale craze to the ever popular crime procedural is Grimm. While it works on both levels, that it blends the two into a unified whole gives the concept so much fizz, as the 22 episodes of its five-disc first season indicate. This one's perfect for marathoning.

Chained

Won’t quite your attention hostage.

Thriller

Rod Lott
I'll be a lifelong Boxing Helena cheerleader, so it was with tempered enthusiasm that I greeted Jennifer Lynch's Chained.
